The J. Geils Band reminded the close to sold out crowd at DTE Energy Music Theatre last night why they ruled Detroit in the 1970′s and 1980′s.
They are STILL, 31 years after the first time I saw them (July 22, 1980), the best live band on the planet. Peter Wolf commands the stage and is as funky and energetic as ever. With his wild hair hanging out under the fedora, and his skinny legs carrying him everywhere including into the pavilion, he is hard not to watch. But the band never lets up, and as a unit they cooked their way through a set filled with blues, rock, funk, and hits.

For the third year in a row, The J. Geils Band have reunited to perform live. In 2009, it was to open the House of Blues, then last year, it was to join (and arguably outshine) Aersomith at Fenway Park. This summer they are back for series of Northeast shows, including a two night stand at the Bank of America Pavilion last weekend that proved the band still has it and then-some. Full Article….

The gauntlet was thrown down early Saturday night – before the J. Geils Band had even played one note, in fact. With the house lights down, and the house party about to begin, the sporadically reforming, yet perennially adored group was introduced to a sold-out crowd as “the original bad boys from Boston’’ – a seeming (and not so subtle) dig at that other ill-behaved, break-up-and-make-up band with whom Geils shared (or did not share, exactly) a Fenway Park stage last summer. The J. Geils Band is a bar band supreme. A rock ’n’ roll Hercules like Peter Wolf may take exception to that designation, but it’s so right. And it’s a designation that’s meant as high, high praise.
