The Aerosmith/J. Geils Band double feature at Fenway Park last month may have been one of the ultimate Boston rock experiences but like so many Hub moments, there was a Rhode Island connection as well, with West Greenwich drummer Marty Richards playing with the Geils band.
Playing at Fenway “was unbelievable,” says Richards. “I’m [originally] from Framingham; I used to go there with my dad all the time. Our dressing room was in their locker room. It was really special.”
Some of the special moments included getting faked out by Peter Wolf on some James Brown-style arm-waving cues. Reminded of that, Richards laughed and says, “That’s his fun thing; he loves faking us all out.”

The Uptown Horns added a tight and funky roar of horns to the mix, at one point treating the crowd to a rendering of the Blues Brothers classic intro when Wolf asked them to belt out a solo. As always, their musianship added to the mix immeasurably.
Wolf went crowd surfing during “Musta Got Lost,” creating near hystweria as he walked his way down Aisle 4 from the stage, then vaulted over laps and legs in Row M, and then trotted down Aisle 3 to the stage. The Dogg, BLT Jeff, Jennifer, Danny D. and Timmy B. had aisle seats in the 8th row. aisle 3. We were able to reach out and slap hands with the Rock Legend!

By GARY GRAFF Of The Oakland Press - No band throws a party — make that a houseparty — quite like the J. Geils Band. We know that in Detroit, of course, where the Boston group has adopted home town status and has recorded all or part of its three live albums. But even by its own roof-shaking standards, Geils’ “Detroit Shakedown” on Saturday night at the DTE Energy Music Theatre was one that will go down as special in the annals of its Motor City concert conquests.

By Susan Whitall / Detroit News Music Writer – Sometimes a place is best understood through the eyes of an outlier. That’s true of southeastern Michigan, which becomes “Detroit City” in the inimitable patois of J. Geils Band front man Peter Wolf.
In “Detroit City” everything is possible: the music is legendary, all men are handsome, the women unutterably gorgeous, and everybody is dancing. The J. Geils Band loves Detroit and as all lovers should, the band reminds us of our charms, even if we’ve forgotten. More…..

Blow your face out – Next weekend, I’ll be flying to Detroit to catch the J. Geils Band in concert.
Yeah, yeah, I know what you’re thinking: “You’re going to Detroit? For those ‘Centerfold’ guys?”
Darned right, I am. But if they choose not to play “Centerfold,” I won’t be too upset.
It must be a Midwest thing, because no one in Jacksonville seems to understand why I’d travel a thousand-plus miles to hear “Love Stinks” live. Those people have obviously never been to a Geils concert. This is the last great American R&B showband, and I’m not about to let something as trivial as a thousand miles keep me from seeing the show, one of just two the band is playing this year.
I’ve seen hundreds of musicians perform live, everyone from Earth, Wind and Fire to the Rolling Stones, Taylor Swift to the Beach Boys, Kenny Chesney to the Grateful Dead. None of them could bring as much energy to the stage or leave the audience as emotionally and physically drained as the J. Geils Band. It ain’t nothin’ but a party, to borrow a line from one of their songs.
Of course, that was 30-some years ago. Can they still bring it? We’ll see. But if not, well, at least I get a lovely weekend in Detroit out of the deal.

CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI |FOR THE FLINT JOURNAL – J. Geils frontman Peter Wolf said he feels honoured that his Boston-based band was asked to headline the “Exclusive Saturday Night House Party End of Summer Blow Your Face Out” show on Saturday at DTE Energy Music Theatre.
“For us, it’s a place where we did six in a row one time when the Geils band was going strong,” Wolf said via telephone about DTE Energy Music Theatre, once known as Pine Knob Music Theatre. “I think it broke a record at one time.
“Pine Knob, historically, like Cobo Hall, has great importance to us. We played so many shows there. It’s unique. It was a great opportunity for us to bond with the audience. We had a communion between the audience and the band. The audience would get crazy and we’d get twice as crazy and the audience would get three times as crazy and we’d keep going back and forth like that.”
Wolf, who released the solo album “Midnight Souvenirs” in April, said it may be fans’ last time to see J. Geils.
“We have no plans after the Detroit date,” he said matter of factly. “We make no bones about it. This time could be the last time. We just never know. There’s no rhyme or reason”. More……

J. Geils Band and Aerosmith Rock Fenway Park. I’ve seen both bands before, but it’s been about 25 years for J. Geils Band and 15 for Aerosmith, and this was my first concert at Fenway Park, so I knew that alone would make August 14, 2010 a special show.
J. Geils band was preceded by a full marching band entering the stage single file and playing “Centerfold”, then they left (which took quite some time) and the real band took the stage. They looked and sounded great, and seemed to be having a fantastic time – I don’t know why these guys don’t still tour. Peter Wolf was in great form – his voice, moves and stage raps don’t give away his age, though he does look a bit more freakish these days. Plus Magic Dick still has most of his hair – nobody rocks the white man afro or the harmonica like him! They were even joined by their longtime touring horns – The Up Town Horns.

Bottom Line: The impossible dream for Boston rock comes true. It was a beautiful day in Boston for the twi-night doubleheader at Fenway Park as local heroes Aerosmith and the J. Geils Band teamed for a blockbuster evening that was long on hits and short on fouls. It might have been old-timers night, but both bands swung for the fences and featured some of the best playing Fenway has seen in years.
Aerosmith and J. Geils started in Boston 40 years ago, but they never had performed together, and neither had played Fenway. This pairing at the famed ballpark sold out in less than a day. The original J. Geils lineup broke up in 1985, but they have been reuniting and playing around New England recently. Aerosmith has been going strong for the past quarter-century, touring regularly, but lead singer Steven Tyler’s offstage antics have raised questions about the band’s future, as has speculation about his becoming a judge on Fox’s “American Idol.”

Herald readers review Aerosmith and J. Geils Band. On a beautiful evening, so full of promise, wonder, and hope, Aerosmith came out and laid an egg, in front of 40,000 Fenway Faithful, letting J. Geils blow them off the stage in the process. For me, it was sheer heartbreak, and disappointment. A ten hour drive back to Lititz PA this morning, in complete silence with the girl of my dreams, as I could not manage to overcome my disappointment with this show.
Are you kidding me? No “Lightning Strikes?” No “Seasons of Wither?” no “No More-No More?” No “My Fist, Your Face?”
Instead, Boston Massachusetts got generic vanilla from the Bad Boys of Boston, and my 40 years of loyalty to this band came to a shocking close.

Aerosmith, J. Geils touch ‘em all at Fenway. Fenway Park opened in 1912, and there have been some memorable shenanigans in the outfield in the last 98 years, but it’s safe to say no one from Tris Speaker to the confounding Manny Ramirez ever imagined a white grand piano atop the Green Monster. But that’s how Aerosmith topped off its ballpark show on Saturday, with Steven Tyler playing piano on a mostly-solo version of “Dream On” in an encore for 38,000 fans.
The summit meeting of Beantown’s best classic rockers saw both Aerosmith and the J.Geils Band deliver some of their top hits, turning much of the night into a delirious sing-along.
Despite fans’ pipe dreams and speculations, there was no onstage jam involving the two groups, but two distinctly Boston-flavored sets.
